THE CLIENT

Preston Central Scout Group are a scout group based in the centre of Preston, Lancashire. They are one of 22 Scout Groups that make up Preston & District Scouts, which is in turn part of West Lancashire Scout County.

WHAT I DID

The group approached the district media team, as previously the only online presence they had was a Facebook and Twitter Page. They wanted a website that would allow them to further enhance their online presence, enabling prospective parents and members to find out more information about the group and what they get up to. Again with the help of another member of the media team, we set about designing a bespoke website based on the WordPress content management system (CMS). We used the same theme as the district ‘Skills For Life’ created by Mersey Weaver Scout District based in Cheshire along with some plugins, designed specifically for the above theme, from the 2nd New Haw Scout Group to enhance the themes functionality.

Visitors to the site needed to be able to find out about the different sections that the group runs as well as contact details. We started off by adding basic content about each section, that will give visitors to the site a brief overview of what each section can get up to.

We have also setup several other pages including a ‘Document Store’ where the group can upload documents such as their policies and sectional joining packs, a ‘Team’ page where the members of each section are listed so visitors can see who looks after each part of the group, an events page where the group can list any events they may be hosting, a news page where the group can update visitors about what they have been up to and finally a contact page with a simple three field contact form that allows visitors to contact the GSL with any enquiries.

Along with the above, links where also added throughout the site to the groups joining form and to the district website so visitors can find about the district scout shop, the latest coronavirus regulations and generally about scouting in the wider Preston area.
